  Supervisor Walter Alcorn invites you to Explore Hunter Mill District at the Fifth Annual Tour de Hunter Mill

  The Tour de Hunter Mill (TdHM) is a community bike ride offering 2 routes (long & short) that change each year to highlight different areas of the district.

  Join your neighbors, family, and friends on a scenic ride that will begin and end this year at the North County Governmental Center (1801 Cameron Glen Dr, Reston- across from the Reston Regional Library)

  Since its start in 2021, the TdHM has featured new routes each year to offer riders a fresh view as well as highlight various bike-friendly areas of Hunter Mill District.

  North County Governmental Center (*NCGC)

  1801 Cameron Glen Dr, Reston

  *The NCGC is located off Baron Cameron Drive, across from the Reston Regional Library and is a shared building that includes the Hunter Mill District Board of Supervisors Office & the Reston Police Station.

  There will be a designated Rest Stop available along the routes.

  Ride marshals and Fairfax County police officers will be on hand to help ensure a safe ride and assist as needed.

  
  

  TdHM Ride Registration Information

  Open from April 1- May 4:

  Fee is $30 per adult rider. We require a first name and last name for each ticket.

  Event is rain or shine, see policies below.

  Registration fee covers rider & marshal insurance costs, 2025 Tour de Hunter Mill socks and a $5 donation to Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling for coordinating the registration and other ride logistics. Fees are collected to fund the ride, not for profit.

  *Children 15 and under are free but must be riding with an adult.

  *Once the adult is registered, please send an email to the address below with your name, contact information, the child’s name & the child’s age and you will receive registration instructions.

  Policies

  1. Children 15 and under must be riding with a parent or guardian.

  2. NO REFUNDS due to event cancellation or if the purchaser cannot attend the event. Event is rain or shine.

  3. In the event of inclement weather, please check the website for ride day information and announcements.

  4. NO TRANSFERS of registration to other riders

  5. Helmets are required for the duration of the ride and must be worn at all times when riding. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you cannot afford a helmet, we can help with a helmet loan.

  6. Each adult is required to complete a liability waiver during online registration.

  7. Minors must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian. When you send the email to TourHunterMill@fairfaxcounty.gov to register a child, you will receive instructions about waivers for minors.

  It's May! Our regular rides start tonight! Check for the route change!

  Welcome to the kinder, gentler, Monday night ride. We are particularly focused on including, uplifting, and encouraging women who are new to group riding. Thus, it is a no drop ride. This means you will not be left behind. We always have a sweep to stay with riders who have a mechanical issue or are struggling to keep up.  If you've been afraid to join a group ride because you think you'll hold people back or can't keep up, THIS is YOUR ride.

  The ride leaders for this ride are all trained. We can (and will) coach you on everything from when/how to shift to how to change lanes safely and everything in between. Please have a teachable attitude. Our primary concern is the safety of the entire ride.

  Although this is a beginners' ride, we expect all participants to show up with a bicycle that is ready to ride. If it's been on the garage wall for a few months, please take it to your favorite local bike shop and let them give it some love. You must have a red blinky tail-light. You must carry an inner tube that fits your bike. (We'll help you change it if you get a flat).

  If you want a more competitive drop ride, and faster speeds, please consider the RBC Monday Night Green Lizard Womens' Ride.  Please review the speed requirements for that ride.

  And if you want a more sustained riding experience, but still no drop, try the Thursday evening Women's Ride which starts at the Lake House in Reston (near Lake Anne). Please note that although it is a no-drop ride, you should respect their advertised speed.

  Rides are not held when the forecast for rain is greater than 50%. Ride cancellations will be posted on Social Media. If you are not comfortable riding on the roads, please contact one of us before you register for the ride.

  Welcome to our ride! This ride is for RBC women, and includes support from Green Lizard Cycling owners and staff. Monday's route is below. We no longer use paper cue sheets, so please familiarize yourself with the route or put it into your phone or other GPS device. 

  ** If we have 2 ride leaders in any week, our priority will be to have up to 32 riders (maximum of 16 in each group, not including ride leaders and sweepers). We expect all riders to maintain our usual average speed of 15-16 mph. As the season progresses, we MAY, but will not necessarily have a group that rides faster than that average speed, depending on what riders prefer. We will always accommodate riders who can maintain the 15-16 mph average speed. Riders who cannot maintain that average will be asked to leave the group while we are on the WOD, but can join us another time.  Any rider who wants to leave the ride early should let a ride leader or sweeper know. The pace is an average, not a constant, so we expect to accelerate down hills, and faster hill climbers will wait at the top of hills to give everyone a chance to catch up. We will also re-group if we get separated after traffic lights, and we will wait for and help anyone who has a mechanical problem.  If you prefer a slower pace and shorter ride overall, please join the RBC Reston Women's Ride, which is also a 6pm Monday ride.
  

  If you have never or rarely ridden in a group, the ride leaders can give you basic tips and guidelines before and during the ride. You don't need group riding experience to join us, but you must be willing to learn and follow basic group riding rules and etiquette, and you must be comfortable with the concept of riding with a group, and with riding on roads.   

  Lisa Mackem, Susie Littlejohn, and Sam Dancy can lead and sweep, and Dave Meyer or someone else from The Green Lizard can also sweep. If anyone else is interested in leading or sweeping a ride, let one of us know!

  Please note that we pass only on the LEFT. Call the pass to the pedestrian or rider in front of you, and allow plenty of room.

  We'll stay together as much as possible. Sunset is at 8:06 pm. If you will be biking home after the ride, please use a headlight, in addition to your required red taillight.

  Ride distances will vary with the amount of evening daylight. Rides are not held when the forecast for rain is greater than 50%. Ride cancellations will be posted on Social Media and registered riders will be emailed whenever possible. All rides will include a mixture of road and WOD riding.

  RBC A Ride on Tuesday. 6:00 pm start. Hunters Woods Shopping Plaza. You know the drill, but if you don't:

  1) Join RBC, complete the waiver, and sign up for the ride. 

  2) We won't start really riding/"racing" until we make the left on Lawyers Rd. from Steeplechase

  3) We will slow roll at the bottom of Birdfoot to allow a regroup. Nobody is racing or attacking down Birdfoot. Be careful if there is sand, cars, etc. at the corner. Once we get to the bottom and everyone is present and proper, feel free to start hammering.

  4) This is the most important rule. When we make turns onto roads we make sure it is safe for anyone behind us. You are responsible for all the riders behind you, even if there is a gap. In particular, the first rider at the top of the final hill on Stuart Mill is responsible for checking the intersection at Fox Mill and ensuring that the entire group can roll through safely. 

  5) Be careful in neighborhoods, particularly after turning off Franklin Farm. We can continue at a brisk pace, but there are too many blind left/right turns to continue at full intensity

  6) Look out for and call out items on the road that will cause a problem such as branches, gravel, etc. Lawyers in particular always seems to accumulate branches and gravel in the bike lanes.

  7) Do not cross over yellow lines, or cross into oncoming traffic. Do not swarm/pass cars at stop lights, stop signs, etc.

  8) No TT/tri bikes, clip on aero bars, or 'puppy paws' position. No e-bikes or earbuds. Move away from other people before blowing snot rockets.

  This ride launches as one group and splits into A (22-24 mph) and B (19-21 mph) groups at Smith's Switch. Please respect the pace of the B group if you join the B group - no "watt bombs," passing on the right, etc.

  Ride Guidelines:

  1. You must be registered for the ride on the RBC website. 
  2. Do not cross the centerline of the road or pass slowing/stopped cars. Stay in the right lane of traffic at all times, except for when moving across to make a left turn.
  3. You are responsible for the riders behind you. Do not enter an intersection unless it is safe for all of the riders behind you.
  4. Be respectful of other traffic on the W&OD trail. Ride single file and let gaps open if need be to ensure safety of other riders. DO NOT race on the trail - the fast portion of the ride begins at Smith Switch, and it is over once we turn off of Pacific. W&OD “Golden Rule”: treat other W&OD users the way you want cars to treat us on open roads.
  5. Help the group flow smoothly by protecting your front wheel, merging carefully into the draft, and holding your line and position into corners. If you don't want to pull, please communicate that clearly to other riders and stay at the back of the group so as to avoid disrupting the rotation at the front.
  6. No e-bikes are allowed. No TT bikes, clip on aero bars or riding in “puppy paws” position. All bikes must have front and rear brakes - no fixies.

  Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 15. This long-running annual event is a fun and healthy way to start your day. The first 18,000 who register receive a free T-shirt. 

  Once again this year, RBC will have a tent set up at the Herndon pit stop on the Town Hall Green, just off the W&OD. Stop by to say hello, pick up some snacks and give-aways, and learn more about bicycle commuting.

  This ride launches as one group and splits into A (22-24 mph) and B (19-21 mph) groups at Smith's Switch. Please respect the pace of the B group if you join the B group - no "watt bombs," passing on the right, etc.

  Ride Guidelines:

  1. You must be registered for the ride on the RBC website. 
  2. Do not cross the centerline of the road or pass slowing/stopped cars. Stay in the right lane of traffic at all times, except for when moving across to make a left turn.
  3. You are responsible for the riders behind you. Do not enter an intersection unless it is safe for all of the riders behind you.
  4. Be respectful of other traffic on the W&OD trail. Ride single file and let gaps open if need be to ensure safety of other riders. DO NOT race on the trail - the fast portion of the ride begins at Smith Switch, and it is over once we turn off of Pacific. W&OD “Golden Rule”: treat other W&OD users the way you want cars to treat us on open roads.
  5. Help the group flow smoothly by protecting your front wheel, merging carefully into the draft, and holding your line and position into corners. If you don't want to pull, please communicate that clearly to other riders and stay at the back of the group so as to avoid disrupting the rotation at the front.
  6. No e-bikes are allowed. No TT bikes, clip on aero bars or riding in “puppy paws” position. All bikes must have front and rear brakes - no fixies.
